The Great Exchange
Paul's letter to Philemon illustrates the Gospel through the story of Onesimus, a runaway slave whose name means "useful" but who had become useless by fleeing. Paul demonstrates the great exchange - where Christ takes our debt and gives us His righteousness - by offering to pay Onesimus's debt to his master. This theological principle of imputation shows how we are all like Onesimus: once unprofitable rebels who become useful through Christ's intervention. The letter teaches us to view others through the lens of redemption rather than past mistakes, make reconciliation voluntary rather than forced, and be willing to absorb the cost of restoration in our relationships.
