Defying the Empire

Sep 13, 2026    Pastor Spencer Fusselman

Moses lived one of the most dramatic lives in all of Scripture, and his story is ultimately about a faith that refused to bow to earthly power. His parents defied Pharaoh's death edict by trusting that God had a purpose for their son, placing him in the Nile in an act of terrifying obedience. Moses himself walked away from the wealth and power of Egypt, choosing to identify with the suffering people of God because he understood that sin has a shelf life and eternal reward does not. The plagues were not random destruction but a systematic dismantling of every false god Egypt trusted, proving that whatever we place our hope in, God alone is supreme. The Passover lamb pointed directly to Christ, whose blood covers us not because of our moral effort but because of His substitution in our place. At the Red Sea, God intentionally cornered His people so they would have nowhere to look but up, and He made dry ground where there had been an ocean. Faith is not a passive feeling. It is a daily, calculated choice to take God at His word before the miracle ever arrives.
