Christ's Perfect Once For All Sacrifice

Aug 2, 2026    Pastor Steve Kerns

The Old Testament sacrificial system was a gift from God, but it was never the final solution. Year after year, priests offered animals on behalf of the people, yet those sacrifices had to be repeated precisely because they were not permanently effective. They could not clear the conscience, they could not change the heart, and no animal was ever truly worthy of paying the price for human sin before a holy God. The entire system was a shadow, pointing forward to the One who would come and accomplish what it never could.

Jesus Christ fulfilled everything the old system foreshadowed. Unlike the animals brought to the altar as unwilling victims, He came willingly, foreordained before the foundation of the world, always ready to hear the Father say the time had come. His one offering on the cross accomplished in a single moment what centuries of repeated sacrifice could not. He did not cover sin. He purged it entirely. And when the work was finished, He sat down at the right hand of God, a posture that speaks volumes. The priests of the Old Testament stood continuously because their work was never done. Christ sat down because His was.

For believers, this means that standing before God is already perfect through faith in Christ. Every past sin is washed clean, the conscience is cleared, and even future sins have been atoned for. God has chosen not to remember confessed and repented sin because of the finished work of His Son. The process of sanctification continues as the Holy Spirit transforms daily life, but the foundation is secure. There is no new sacrifice needed, no performance required, and no guilt that needs to be carried. The work is done, and the only fitting response is faith, gratitude, and a life of genuine worship from a heart that has been truly changed.
